When faced with financial hardships, a talented female troubadour in 1930s Cuba must defy her religious promise to never perform again, or else risk her and her family’s survival.

Director's
Statement

"I’ve always felt a deep connection to the music and culture of early 1900s Cuba, a connection passed down through my grandfather, who carried that world with him to the United States. In his home, music was constant. Whether from a vinyl record, or his own voice and guitar, it was always present. He was, in many ways, a troubadour himself, much like María Teresa Vera.

As his grandchild, I was introduced to María Teresa’s music at a very young age. My grandfather, along with my grandmother and mother, made sure I understood who she was and why she mattered. Despite her immense talent and influence, her story is not widely known, even within Cuban music, and that has always stayed with me.

So just as my grandfather once shared her story with me, I now feel a responsibility to share it with others. To bring her voice forward, to honor her legacy, and to invite audiences to discover an artist whose impact deserves to be seen, heard, and remembered."
